John A. Johnson, 83, of 1408 N. Virginia Avenue, died Saturday, May 14th, 2005, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Rev. Kathy Graves, Director of Spiritual Care Hospice of North Iowa officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Kiester, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa. John Abraham Johnson was born October 13, 1921 in Bayard, Nebraska the son of Thomas and Hannah (Graves) Johnson. He attended schools in Arnold, Nebraska and Phoenix, Arizona. During the depression, he worked in the CCC?s (Civilian Conservation Corps) and later worked in the aircraft industry in southern California. John was an Air Force Veteran of WW II, serving with the Flying Tigers in China. He received a letter of commendation from his superiors for his actions in assisting other members of the crew when their plane crashed over China. In 1946, John married Harriet Hermundstad in Sacramento, California. They had two children, Claudia and Timothy. They moved to Mason City in 1951. John worked in sales for many different companies throughout his working life. John was a life member of the VFW. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and developed a talent for wood carving in later years. John was a gregarious person who enjoyed his friends and neighbors and most especially his family and pets. He will always remain vibrant in our hearts. John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Harriet of Mason City; daughter, Claudia of Mason City; several nieces, nephews and friends. John was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings and son, Timothy in 1963.
