Mason City John C. Vaughn, 84, of Mason City, died Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, February 6, 2009 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with Rev. Jim Stiles of First United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be held 4:00 to 6:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Glendale Masonic Cemetery in Des Moines, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the John C. Vaughn memorial fund or the First United Methodist Church.
John was born on March 4, 1924 in Dallas Center, Iowa, the son of Russell and Elpha (Gilliland) Vaughn. He graduated from high school in Woodward, Iowa. He entered the United States Navy in 1942 and served his country in WWII until his honorable discharge in 1946. He married Aletha M. Hopp on November 18, 1956 in Des Moines, Iowa. He worked for the Ford Motor Company for 20 years, White Farm Equipment for 4 years, and Grant Village for 10 years. John and his wife lived many different places in the country until moving to Mason City in 1976. He was a member of the Benevolence Lodge # 145 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite Bodies, El Kahir Shriner, American Legion, V.F.W., and the AmVets. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church. John was a generous man that liked giving his time and talents to people. He also loved the time he spent with his family and friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife, Aletha of Mason City; sisters, Lena McMahon of Des Moines, Ruth Garren of Perry, IA, Martha Kennedy of Woodward, IA, Mary Burkhart of Woodward several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Raymond, Paul, Robert, James, Wilbur, William and two sisters, Della Vaughn and Marie Dixon.
