MASON CITY Joseph L. Marzen, 52, of Marble Rock, died Saturday, July 23, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, in the company of his family. Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 26, 2011, with a visitation from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Dougherty, Iowa, with Monsignor John Hemann and Father Rodney Allers officiating. A wake will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM, on Monday, July 25, 2011, at the church, with a Rosary Service being held at 7:00 PM. Interment will be in St. Patrick Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Helen Rossi Volunteer Guest House, 200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, Iowa, 52242.
Joe was born March 10, 1959, in Mason City, the son of Leo and Bernadine (Boom) Marzen. He attended elementary school in Dougherty before graduating from Rockford Senior High School in 1978. He continued farming with his father and brothers after graduation, as a family unit. Joe married Germaine Hemann on August 22, 1981, in Stacyville. Together they had four children: Rebecca of Nevada, IA, Ashley, who is now in Heaven, Timothy of Rockwell, and Travis of Marble Rock. They made a home in rural Dougherty where they farmed for over 30 years. Joe was very family oriented, and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards with his friends and family, farming, his childrens events, and the races. Joe was a hardworking man who could always be counted on and was always willing to help a friend in need. He will be deeply missed by all who loved and knew him.
Joe is survived by his wife, Germaine, of Marble Rock; three children, Rebecca (Tom) Brandau, Tim (Amber) Marzen and their children Austin and Mya, Travis Marzen; his parents, Leo and Bernadine Marzen; sisters, Kathy (Stan) Hemann, Leanne (Mike) Tatone, Dianne (Bill) Knapp, Angela (John) Pritchard, Sharon (Mike) Burke, Marie (Pat) McAleer; brothers, Mark (Doreen) Marzen, Ron Marzen, Andy (Jackie) Marzen; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Ashley; nephew, Nic Marzen; paternal grandparents, Andy and Louise Marzen; maternal grandparents, Ted and Babe Boom.
