DES MOINES: Julie A. Hugo Sumpter, 50, of Des Moines, died Wednesday, December 9, 2015 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital, Des Moines. Memorial services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, December 18, 2015 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City with Pastor Kathy Graves, Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Inurnment will take place in Elmwood-St. Joseph Columbarium. The family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home. In Des Moines, a celebration of life will be held from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM Saturday, December 19, 2015 at 215 East Third Street. Julie was born June 4, 1965, in Mason City and had worked at EMC Insurance for the last 15 years.

Julie was an avid cyclist and bicycle advocate. Her beaming smile and joyful laugh were fixtures at biking events Julie helped run BIKEIOWA.com and rode RAGBRAI many times. When she wasn’t on a bike, Julie loved dogs, kayaking, snowshoeing, photography, and gardening.

Julie is survived by her husband Scott; her brother and sister-in-law, Bruce and Leslie Hugo; step-mother, Gloria Hugo.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Nancy Hugo; father, Gunther Hugo and grandparents.
