Kenneth E. Johnston, 86, of 340 26th St. S.W., died Wednesday (March 2, 2005) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday at Our Saviour?s Lutheran Church, 2502 South Jefferson Avenue, with Rev. Joel Dahlen officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood- St. Joseph?s Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Friday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be given to the Kenneth E. Johnston Memorial Fund. Ken was born July 13, 1918 in Marshalltown, Iowa the son of Eugene and Daisy (Volk) Groff. Ken?s mother later was remarried to Burt Johnston, who adopted and raised Ken. He attended and graduated from Mason City Schools. Ken was married to LaVonne Anderson on February 1, 1941 in Mason City and they were married for 64 years. After marriage Ken moved to Washington to work in the Vancouver shipyards during WWII, then moved back to Mason City where he worked various jobs until starting Ken?s T.V. which was in business for over thirty years in Mason City. Ken enjoyed cooking, had an interest in ham radio, anything that plugged in, and was an avid woodworker. Ken is survived by his wife, LaVonne of Mason City; children, Keith ?Buz? and wife Becky Johnston of Mason City, Deborah Quayle and husband Raymond of Mason City, LeAnn Berger and husband Dan of Waukee, Iowa; grandchildren, Shawn Bohl and husband Bryan, Michael Johnston and Jen, Keri Lawler and husband Jason, Charles Spear, Ryan Pennington and wife Emily, Christopher Pennington and Jennifer, Dennis Shannon and wife Kimberly, Angie Madagon and husband John, Joseph Shannon and wife Roxanne; great grandchildren, B.J., Cody, Dalton, Aunna, Lexi, Reagan, Rebeka, Jace, Madlin-Kate, Jack Ryan, Max, Kaleigh, and Ashleigh; brother Merle Groff and wife Marge of Iowa Falls; sister, Marie Neuhring, Mason City. Ken?s preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Joyce Ann (Johnston) Stevens. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the wonderful people at Mercy Homecare and Hospice for all their help and support, a special thank you to Diane Weide and Linda Halsne, we could have not done it without you.
