Laurine O. (Schultz) Byerly, 95, of Nora Springs, IA, formerly of Mason City, IA, died Sunday, June 22, 2014, at the Nora Springs Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Rev. Brent Hamilton of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place in the Nora Springs Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Laurine Byerly memorial fund in care of the family (839 7th Street S.E., Mason City, IA 50401). Baby Laurine was born at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, IA, and was left to be adopted. At nearly 3 months of age, she was taken home by Hazel (Sellon) and Earl Schultz of Nora Springs, IA. She was legally adopted at 6 months of age. Laurine attended Nora Springs schools and graduated in 1936 as the valedictorian of her class. The summer of 1936, she moved with her family to Mason City where she worked with her family at Earl's Fruit Market, located on South Federal in Mason City. In August of 1939, she was united in marriage to Richard Byerly in Mason City. The couple was blessed with twin boys: William Charles and the late Robert Eugene. The couple lived in Winona, MN for a short time before moving back to Mason City. After the passing of her father, Earl Schultz, the couple then operated Earl's Fruit Market from 1950 to 1985. Laurine was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City and was active in various offices of the church. She enjoyed working for missions. After a couple years of retirement she was asked to be on the Board of the District of Mason City of the United Methodist Women. She served as Treasurer & in Nominations and other offices. The family enjoyed several summers at Clear Lake at their cottage. Laurine enjoyed the sports her sons were active in while in high school, as well as Bob's pursuit in the Milwaukee Brave’s minor league & Bill's pursuit in conservation for the State of Iowa. She enjoyed travelling abroad to Europe, Nova Scotia, 2 trips to Washington DC, Boston, Florida and Hawaii. She also enjoyed reading, writing, and scrapbooking, as well as the times spent with her sons and four grandchildren. She had a lovely life with her husband for nearly 65 years. Later life she spent time at Nora Springs Care Center where her grandson, William 'Bill' Richard Byerly is the administrator. Those left to remember her life are son: William 'WC' Byerly and wife Diane of Mason City; daughter-in-law: Dolores Byerly of St. Augustine, FL; her grandchildren: Kelly Meszaros and husband Don of St. Augustine, Stefanie Sebring and her husband Eric of Blairsville, GA, William R. Byerly and wife Katie of Mason City, and LeAnn Rodriguez and husband John Tucson, AZ; great grandchildren: Mathew & Kimberly Meszaros, Joseph Byerly, and Alexis Sebring. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2004; and her son Bob in 2010.
