Lawrence 'Larry' H. Ewers

Mason City Lawrence Larry H. Ewers, 84, of Mason City, died Thursday, December 9, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Memorial services will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 16, 2010, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 1st St. N.E. with Rev. Patti Aurand officiating. Per Larrys wishes he was cremated and there will be no visitation. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or the Lime Creek Nature Center.
Larry was the youngest of ten children born, May 17, 1926, in Mason City to Leonard and Ida (Miller) Ewers. He graduated in 1944 from Mason City High School. Larry enlisted in the Navy on May 5, 1944. He participated in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Invasion of Okinawa, Philippine Liberation, and Occupation of Japan. When he returned home, he worked several construction jobs. Eventually he formed Ewers and Pope Construction Company with Wayne Pope. They built custom homes. After retirement, he taught a senior woodworking class. Larry supervised the reconstruction of the popcorn wagon and the antique phone booth at Music Man Square. He loved working with wood and made duck calls and duck call boxes for Ducks Unlimited to be raffled at the banquets. On March 19, 2005, he was honored for outstanding contributions and craftsmanship to Ducks Unlimited. Also, he made most of the furniture that is in the Ewers home.
Because he had many skills in building, he helped many people with their building projects. Larry was president of Builders Exchange and Rod and Gun Club. He was on the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board when Lime Creek Nature Center was planned.
Being an avid hunter, Larry spent many times at his cabin at Eagle Lake near Britt, IA. He loved to cook the wild game and have other hunters over to eat; then watch the Monday Night Football game.
In June, you could find Larry at De Mille Lac Lake, Ontario, Canada, fishing walleyes. He was at camp site 2, where he had many fish frys. He would tell everyone, this is my 61st consecutive year at the lake.
Every year he fished on the Missouri River with his sons and Don Plagge. During January and February, he fished red fish at Port Aranas, Texas, with Bob Berry.
Larry is survived by his wife: Laura Lee Ewers of Mason City; 3 children: Linda (Jerry) Berding, Russell (Terri) Ewers, and Steven (Joan) Ewers; 5 grandchildren: Caleb (Amanda) Ewers, Catherine (Patrick Sires) Ewers, Karri Berding, Cheryl (Thane Soderstrom) Ewers, and Rachel (Matt) Gunderson; 1 great grandchild: Fletcher Sires Ewers; 1 sister: Geraldine Jensen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Dexter, Harold, Clarence, and Albert; sisters: Dulcie, Berneice, Fern, and Alma.

Memorials:
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First Congregational United Church of Christ or the Lime Creek Nature Center.

Cemetery:
A private family inurnment will be held at a later date in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation:
Per Larrys wishes he was cremated and there will be no visitation.
