Mason City Lee Roy Maertens, age 69, of Mason City, died Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, August 13, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. with Pastor Dan Gerrietts officiating. Inurnment will be held in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs with Military Honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. A gathering of friends and family will be held 5-7 PM Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Lee Roy Maertens memorial fund in care of the family. Roy was born December 17, 1940 in Nora Springs, IA the son of Sylvin J. Maertens and Minnie (Boerjon) Heitland. He attended school in Nora Springs and graduated from High School in 1959. After graduation, Roy served his country in the United States Air Force until 1963. Then he worked as a medical aide at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN while completing Sales Training Incorporated in 1967. Roy married Joan Hanson on August 5, 1967 and they made their home in Minneapolis, MN for 4 years. In 1971 Renee was born and they moved to Mason City, IA where Roy became Director of Materials Management at North Iowa Medical Center. Steve was born in 1974. Roy also worked as Director of Purchasing at the Mitchell County Hospital in Osage, IA before retiring in 2000. Through the years Roy enjoyed golfing, snowmobiling, camping, fishing, playing cards, watching NASCAR, Viking and Hawkeye football, attending his grandkids activities, and most of all spending time with family and friends. Many will remember Roy or G as the life of the party. All those who knew him will miss his unique wit, humorous spirit and friendly personality. His family will also miss his caring soul, supportive nature, and overwhelming love for family. Those left to cherish his memory of his life include his wife of 43 years, Joan Maertens of Mason City, daughter, Renee and husband Scott Kofoot of Fort Dodge, IA, son, Steve Maertens of Clive, IA, grandchildren, Cade and Kenzie Kofoot; sister, Shirley McGonigle of Clarion, IA; his brothers, Bill Maertens and wife Iola of Toledo, IA, and John Maertens and wife Pat of Elk River, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
