Leo W. Barkema

BELMOND, IOWA ? Leo W. Barkema, 83 of Belmond, died Saturday, June 18, 2005 at the Belmond Care Center. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date in the Amsterdam Cemetery in Goodell. Leo was born June 27, 1921 the son of Hauko Barkema and Grace (Lieuwen) Barkema in rural Goodell. He attended school in Goodell and served his country in the United States Army achieving the rank of Corporal. Leo was united in marriage to Noreen McMahon on November 21, 1942 in Belmond. They moved to Mason City in 1961. Leo worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation for 36 years in the maintenance department. He traveled extensively and made many trips to Northern, Minnesota to fish. He also enjoyed golfing, and even got a hole-in-one. Leo is survived by his wife Noreen Barkema of Belmond; brothers, Harvey Barkema and wife Irene of Forest City and Mervin Barkema and wife Irene of Klemme; sisters, Marvel Statdlander of Sheffield and Jean Ostendorf of Klemme. Leo is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Theodore and Leland. Major Erickson Funeral Home & Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
