Lester M. Colson, 83, of Rockwell, IA, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at home surrounded by his family from complications of lung cancer. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM, Friday, March 28, 2003 at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 P.M. Thursday at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be given to the Lester M. Colson Memorial Fund. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Lester was born February 5, 1920 on a small farm near Dunksburg, Missouri, son of Jesse and Eula Mae Colson. Lester made his choice to serve God at the early age of twelve years old and was faithful to that commitment until he took his last breath. He was married to LaVonne Roline November 10, 1944 while serving in the Army Air Force during WWII. Mr. Colson was employed by John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works for a short period of time. After tenant farming for approximately 12 years, he and LaVonne purchased the farm near Rockwell in 1962 where he spent the rest of his life. After retiring from farming he ran a salvage operation from his home until 2002. Lester was well known in the area and surrounding areas as a hard working and honest man and will be missed by all. Lester is survived by his wife of 58 years, one son Roger (Brenda) of Rockwell, three daughters: Marilyn (Harold) Nieuwenhuis of Des Moines, Janice (Frank) Ramirez of Mason City, and Marcia Colson of Clear Lake, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two sisters Elizabeth (Leslie) Printz of Midland, TX, Martha (Henry) Heins of Hampton, two brothers Benjamin (Nadine) of Farley, IA, Carl (Shirley) of Sedalia, MO, and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse JR. in infancy, John R., and his parents.
