Lloyd T. Klein

Lloyd T. Klein, 92, of Mason City, died peacefully Thursday, January 5th at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit surrounded by his family. Lloyd was a loving, devoted husband, caring father, treasured grandfather and faithful friend to many.

A Celebration of His Life will be held at 11:00 on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania, Mason City. Military honors will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Association. A lunch for family and friends will be provide in the fellowship hall following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to Hospice of North Iowa or to the Mason City High School Athletic Hall of Fame in Lloyd’s memory.

Lloyd was born on January 23, 1924, the son of Walter and Tena (Erickson) Klein in Manley, Iowa. He attended Mason City schools, playing state championship basketball. Lloyd graduated from high school in 1943. His classmates always held a special place in his heart and he thought of them as his extended family. Lloyd went on to proudly serve his country during WWII in the United States Army. On January 29, 1950, Lloyd married the love of his life, Janet Berg.

Lloyd was passionate about his friends He loved telling jokes and stories, sharing good conversations with them, and never missed an opportunity to help someone. As an outdoorsman, Lloyd was an avid fisherman and hunter. He had two green thumbs and a large garden, providing vegetables for his family and the neighbors. Lloyd played golf, proudly making a hole in one. He played community softball and was inducted in the Mason City Softball Hall of Fame. He also was inducted in the Mason City High School Athletic Hall of Fame for his State Championship 1943 High School Basketball Team. This August Lloyd and his friend, Gus Pappas, represented their beloved basketball coach, Judge Grimsley, at the Athletic Hall of Fame Honors. He lived a rich and full life filled with the joy of family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janet; daughter, Nancy Klein Maland (Knoxville, TN) and her husband Chuck Maland; and a grandson who adored and admired his grandfather, J.T. Maland.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Shirley Quinn, his brother, Loren Klein, and his infant daughter, Sue Ellen Klein.
