Lucille C. Schultz

Lucille Cathern Schultz, 90, of Mason City, passed away Friday, September 21, 2012 at the Heritage Care Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Avenue with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the Lucille C. Lucille was born December 2, 1921 in Miller, Iowa, the daughter of Anton and Luella (Evanson) Nelson. She had one brother Alton Nelson and one sister, Violet Roswag. Lucille attended grade school in Miller and began high school in Garner, Iowa before the family moved to Mason City, where she graduated from Mason City High School in 1939. In 1941, she graduated from Mason City Junior College (now known as NIACC) with a teaching certificate. Her first teaching job was in a country school in Ellington Township near Miller, followed by a year teaching at the Miller Independent School, the same grade school she attended. She then returned to school and enrolled at the Iowa State Teachers College (now known as University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, after which she taught elementary school in Manly, Iowa and Charles City, Iowa. Leaving teaching, she moved on to the Park Clinic in Mason City, starting out at the switchboard and then moving to the Pharmacy. Lucille married Kermit Schultz on January 6, 1952 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura, Iowa. They farmed near Ventura until moving to Mason City in 1955, where Kermit worked at Curries Hardware Store and Lucille worked part-time at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Their only child Kevin, was born in Mason City in 1957. Kermit passed away in 1965, leaving Lucille to care for and support their family. She took a para-professional job at Garfield Elementary school in Mason City and made plans to return to school again to renew her teaching certificate. Lucille drove many nights to classes in Fayette, Iowa, and she and Kevin spent their summers there until Lucille received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Upper Iowa University in 1969. Lucille taught elementary school in Mason City for 18 years, at Wilson and Washington schools, until she retired from teaching in June of 1984. In total, she spent 23 years enriching the lives of the students she touched. After retirement, Lucille enjoyed working at Classroom Connections, a teacher’s supply store in Regency Mall. She then spent 20 years as a dedicated volunteer in the business office at KCMR radio, coordinating the station’s mailings and finding other ways to help them stay organized. Lucille is survived by her son Kevin Schultz and his wife Peg of Mason City; granddaughters Kellie Schultz and Paula Schultz both of Mason City; sister-in-law Irma Bokelman and her husband Hank of Ventura; several cousins, nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Betty Hoth and her husband Ralph of Sumner, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her husband Kermit Schultz; parents Anton and Luella Nelson; brother Alton Nelson and wife Gail; sister Violet Roswag and husband Ben; in-laws Maynard Schultz and wife Francis; and Verona Hoeft and husband Art. Lucille will be missed as a dedicated and loving mom and grandma. She always treasured the time she spent with her family, especially her two granddaughters, helping them grow into successful young ladies. Lucille will also be missed by a multitude of friends and acquaintances whose lives she has touched.

Cemetery:
Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
