Marlys Marie Wendel, age 87, passed away peacefully and was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 22, 2024.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 6, 2024, at 10 a.m., at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 4th Street SE, with Pastor Sid Bohls officiating. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, with her husband, Kenneth who was laid to rest March 2002. A visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to St. James Lutheran Church.Marlys was born on November 3, 1936, in Minneapolis, to her parents Kenneth and Violet (Lundholm) Lawrence. She graduated from South High School in Minneapolis in 1954. She worked at Northwestern National Bank, Main Office in downtown Minneapolis for 14 years until 1969, when she married her loving husband Kenneth Howard Wendel, and they resided in his rural Mason City home. She and Kenneth were blessed with two loving sons, Timothy and Gregory.
Marlys was employed by Norwest Information and Computer Center in Mason City until 1984 when the center was relocated to Minneapolis. She was then employed by Hewett Wholesale of Mason City until 1997. When she retired to take care of her husband who had Alzheimer's Dementia.
Her life revolved around her loving family, and she spent many hours with her grandchildren. She was also involved in many organizations in Minneapolis and Mason City. She was very involved in her church, St. James Lutheran, making crafts, WELCA, Quilting and Hope Circle. She served as resident treasurer of Good Shepherd Auxiliary, belonged to Christian Women’s Connection, Grandmas Club, and Lunch Bunch from the church.
Marlys was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth; mother and father, sisters, Nancy MacMillan and husband, Bob and Lolita Nyberg and husband, William; brother, Kenneth Lawrence Jr. and wife, Marilyn; brothers-in-law, L. Michael Sutton, and Calvin Wendel and wife, Shirley; nephew, Doug Nyberg; and nieces, Susan MacMillan, Cindy Stafne and Connie Wendel.
She is survived by her sons, Timothy Wendel (Mariah Moore) and Gregory (Laurie) Wendel; daughter-in-law, Romaine Everett; grandchildren, Ann, Moriah, Hannah, Alyssa, Ryan, Sarah, Morgan, Tyler, and Elizabeth; and six great grandchildren; sister, Diane Sutton; and many nieces and nephews.
