Max G. Hegland, 72, of Mason City, IA died Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Friday, December 7, 2007, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Rev. Jim Stiles of the First United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with Military Honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Thursday, December 6, 2007 at Major Erickson Funeral Home with an Elks Lodge memorial service @ 6:00 P.M. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to the Max G. Hegland memorial fund. Max was born March 29, 1935 in Mason City, IA the son of Gaylord and Viola Corinne (Murray) Hegland. He was raised by his grandmother Ella Gardner, he grew up in Mason City and graduated from Mason City High School. He enlisted in the Army after high school, where he served 22 years until retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer II. While in the service he was married to his first wife Etta, she had a daughter Sylvia. They later divorced and Max then was married to Gloria Leaman in 1983 at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City. He then went to work for Job Services of Iowa for 21 years until retiring. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge #375 where he served as secretary and also Exalted Ruler, and he was also a member the V.F.W. of Clear Lake. He enjoyed the time he spent at the Elks Lodge and the friendships he had there. Max liked to fish, play the slot machines, scratch tickets, taking naps and most of all being around family and friends. He will be best known as a kind, generous man who will be missed by his family and friends and dearly missed by his wife, Gloria. He is survived by wife, Gloria of Mason City; brother, Edward Lembke of Hampton, VA; brother-in-law, Bob Paulson; sister, Rosella M. Crandall and husband Leonard of Waterloo, IA; mother-in-law, Hazel Leaman of Mason City; sister-in-law Carol Washburn and husband Lowell of Mason City; first wife, Etta Hegland and her daughter, Sylvia Seidel; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ardis Paulson, and brother, Joe and father-in-law, Earl Leaman whom he was best of friends.
