Merle L. Johnson

Merle L. Johnson, 89, passed away on March 6, 2017 in Shawnee, Kansas surrounded by her loving family. Funeral Services will be held at a later date.

Merle was born May 14th, 1927 in Fayette, Iowa - the daughter of Lloyd & LaVerle Shaffer. She attended school in Mason City. She was married in 1945 to Dallas Johnson in Mason City and resided there until June 2009. She then moved to Shawnee, Kansas to live with family. She worked at Clifton’s Super Market for 10 years, retiring from Sears in the auditing department after 20 years of service.

Merle enjoyed sewing, crocheting, along with donating her time at the church and cancer center. She enjoyed vacations and traveling to visit her family and cherished the time she spent with them. She also loved playing cards and dancing with her husband. After moving to Kansas she enjoyed family gatherings, playing Bingo and going to theater productions.

She was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church and also a former member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City.

She is survived by her children, Judy Appleby and husband Charlie of Shawnee, Kansas, Mike Johnson and wife Gussella of Clear Lake, Iowa, Kathy Meidlinger and husband Joe of Coralville, Iowa; grandchildren, Shannon, Shawn, Summer, Stacey, Sarah, Hesper and Merlita; great-grandchildren, Tanner, Trevor, Gabriel, Molly, Nathaniel, Sydney, Dyllan, Lylian, Jordan, Tyler, Mia, Zander, Cora and Collin.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Dallas Johnson in 2008, her parents and brothers - Aulden, Forrest, Doyle, Darrel, Jerry and Dale Shaffer.
