GRAFTON: Michael J. Johanns, 49, of Grafton, died Friday, February 7, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Grafton, with Rev. Solveig A.H. Zamzow officiating. Interment will be in the Grafton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City and continue at the church one hour before services. Memorials may be directed to the Michael Johanns Memorial Fund. Mike was born February 10, 1964 in Mason City to Richard and Barbara (Koehler) Johanns. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1982. Mike married Shellie Walsh October 20, 1984 in Manly. To this marriage 2 children were born, Tyler and Jared. Mike was a family man. While the boys were growing up, Mike enjoyed attending all of their sporting events, going camping, jet skiing, 4 wheeling and snowmobiling as a family. As the boys became adults, the families favorite activities were volleyball, Grafton Turkey Days, and snowmobiling with Tyler and Jared. Most recently he enjoyed his role as 'Papa' to his grandsons Trey and Carter. He treasured the hours he spent playing outside with them. Mike was a hard worker, a smart man, known for his ability to do anything and do it well. He was the go-to guy for all who knew him. If someone needed something, Mike was the one to get things done. If Mike wasn't working, he could be found in his shop or garage working on his latest project. He spent many hours volunteering for the city of Grafton by helping renovate the Grafton Community Center and building the sand volleyball courts last summer. He was the plant manager at Carroll George in Northwood for a number of years and spent the last 10 years working at Kraft Foods in Mason City. While working full time in those positions, he enjoyed farming with his father and brother, Tom. He helped others through the end of his life by donating to the Iowa Donor network Mike is survived by his wife, Shellie of Grafton; 2 sons, Tyler (Cari) Johanns of Eagle Lake, Minnesota, Jared Johanns of Grafton; 2 grandchildren, Trey and Carter Johanns; parents, Richard and Barbara Johanns of Grafton; 2 brothers, Tom (Darcee) Johanns of Mason City, Robert Johanns of Des Moines; 2 sisters, Kathleen (Guy) Venz of Grafton, Joleen (Brian) Hansen of St. Ansgar; sister-in-law, Shannon (Mark) Dodd of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews. Mike was preceded in death by 1 brother, Jimmy.
