Mason City Mildred V. Peterson, 89, of Mason City, died Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Good Shepherd Health Center. Funeral services will be held 9:00 AM, Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at First Covenant Church, 411 South Ohio, with Rev. Tammy Swanson Draheim and Pastor Kathy Graves of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be held Monday, September 13, 2010, from 6:00 8:00 PM at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Burial will take place in Woodlawn Cemetery in Alta, IA. The family would like to invite friends to join them for the committal service at 2:00 PM at Woodlawn Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Mildred V. Peterson Memorial Fund in care of the family.
Mildred was born September 21, 1920, in Rembrandt, IA, the daughter of William and Charlotte (Lanham) Patten. She graduated from Aurelia High School in 1937. She also graduated from Buena Vista College (Storm Lake) in 1959 while taking additional credits from the University of Northern Colorado (Greely) and University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls). Mildred was united in marriage to Irving J. Peterson on June 19, 1949, in Aurelia, IA; from this union came two children, Charles and Valerie. She was a member of First Covenant Church, Iowa State Education Association, and National Education Association. Mildred was a teacher for over 30 years for Jefferson and Harding schools in Mason City. She enjoyed antiques, volunteer work, collecting fossils, traveling with her husband on bus trips. She won several awards for her hardanger embroidery. Mildred was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, who will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.
Mildred is survived by her son, Charles (Sharon) Peterson of Chicago, IL; daughter, Valerie Tuel of Des Moines, IA; four grandchildren, Erin (Shane) Ort, Nicole Tuel, Stina and Kaj Peterson; brothers, Robert Patten of Ankeny, IA; sister, Marion Coombs of Aurelia; sisters in-law, Sally and Naomi Patten. She was preceded in death by parents; husband, Irving; three brothers, Wilbur, Lloyd, and Billy Patten; grandson, Bryant Tuel.

Memorials may be directed to the Mildred V. Peterson Memorial Fund in care of the family.
