Norma Jean Helland was born on May 15, 1940, to parents William and Eleanore (Hartkopp) Jackson in Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1958. In 1963, Norma was united into marriage to Arlin Helland at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City. She remained married to the love of her life, her soulmate, for 58 years. They spent the early years of marriage traveling the country and creating lifelong memories. Through this marriage, they became parents to two daughters, Alison Hauser and Stephanie Helland.
In her early years, you could always find Norma at her mother’s house enjoying family, friends, great company, and homemade meals made by her mother. Norma cherished family times, always had an open door during the holiday seasons, and was always present at birthdays with her humor and infectious laugh. Even while working at Ray E. Pauly’s and later at AB Dick Johnson Printing at the side of her husband, she would still always find time to care for family. She always left a smile on everyone’s face with her bright and compassionate personality. Norma was known for her empathy and love for animals… always willing to make a home for a new one. Norma enjoyed spending time with her family where she put together puzzles, baked, and completed cryptograms from the daily paper.
Norma is survived by her husband Arlin; daughters, Alison Hauser of Humboldt and Stephanie Helland of Mason City; grandchildren, Autumn Hauser, Ariel Hauser, Gabe Helland, and Everleigh Woerner; sister, Phyllis Roethler; brother, James Jackson, special cousin Mary Walter and several special nieces and nephews.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents and in-laws, sister Virginia Baago, brother William “Bill” Jackson, and nephew James “JD” True.
