MASON CITY: Paul E. Dempsey, 83, of Mason City, died Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A memorial mass will be held 10:30 AM Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams with Rev. Michael Schueller, celebrant. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. A Rosary service will be held at 7:00 PM. Inurnment will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Columbarium. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
Paul was born May 11, 1927 in Belmond, Iowa the son of William and Viola (Davenport) Dempsey. He graduated from Belmond High School and attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. Paul served in the US Army during WW II. He married Patricia Lambert June 5, 1954 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. A few of Pauls activities included bowling and fishing with his grandchildren. Paul could be seen taking tickets at Mason City High School athletic activities including baseball, softball, cross country, and basketball. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Paul is survived by his wife, Patricia of Mason City; children, Carol (Peter) Nelson of Niceville, Florida, Paul (Celeste) Dempsey of Naperville, Illinois, Linda Dempsey of West Des Moines, Terry (Carla) Dempsey of Mason City, David Dempsey of the Philippines, Sue (Randy) Saathoff of Mason City and Lisa (Chris) Sanchez of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Robert Dempsey of Purcell, Oklahoma, 2 sisters, Donna Buckley of Clear Lake and Betty Byrnes of San Diego, CA.
Paul is preceded in death by his parents, niece, Cindy; sister-in-law, Ann Dempsey; 2 brothers-in-law, Donald Byrnes and Maurice Buckley.
