Pauline B. Dakin

Pauline (Brasser) Dakin, 97, of Mason City, went to her heavenly home on Thursday, August 8, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Health Center. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 A.M., on Monday, August 19, 2013, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams with Rev. Neil Manternach officiating. Upon her wishes she was cremated and there will be no visitation. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Holy Family Catholic Church, Hospice of North Iowa, or Newman Schools. Pauline was born August 21, 1915, the daughter of German immigrants Benedict and Josephine Brasser. She graduated from Holy Family High School and was a lifelong member of the Holy Family Parish. On August 5, 1939, she married Channing E. Dakin II at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City. With the advent of WWII, Chan served in the U.S. Navy and Pauline lived with her new in-laws and worked in retail, training to be a buyer for Younker’s department store, before becoming a homemaker with two children by the early 1950’s. Pauline was a very active volunteer, giving her time to Girl Scouts, Hospice, American Cancer Society, Mercy Auxiliary and Good Shepherd Health Center. She was a past President of the Mason City Women’s Club, P.E.O. Chapter IY, the Holy Family Guild and the Holy Family PTA. She enjoyed playing bridge and sailing. Later in life, she became an avid golfer along with her husband after his retirement. Pauline joined the Mason City Country Club after marrying her husband and was a member for over 73 years. They spent nearly 25 years snow birding in Arizona so golf was a year around event. Pauline is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Lynn) Rinehart of Newton, Iowa; son, Thomas (Dr. Toni) Dakin of Kensett, IA; four granddaughters, six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, June Brasser of Clear Lake and many nieces and nephews. Pauline was preceded in death by her husband, Channing Dakin II; her parents; older brother, Matthew; older sister, Virginia; her twin sister, Josephine (Sister Mary Ann Pauline, BVM) and younger brother, Benedict.
