MASON CITY, IA: Peter E. Farrell, 79, of Mason City, died peacefully Thursday morning, January 28, at the Nora Springs Care Center, Nora Springs, Iowa. There are no services scheduled at this time. Per family request, the body will be cremated. Memorials may be given to the First Presbyterian Church, Mason City or the River City Barbershop Chorus.
Born May 20, 1930 in Bellefonte, PA to Michael and Francis, raised in State College, PA and graduated from Pennsylvania State University as part of the class of '52. Pete remained an ardent Penn State Nittany Lion throughout his life. A state doubles tennis champion in high school, Pete was briefly a tennis instructor before becoming a radio station manager and sports broadcaster. He worked in radio in Missouri and Indiana before coming to Mason City in 1968 at KLSS. Pete was later a night club owner and worked for the State of Iowa Department of Human Services before retiring and working part time as a railroad crew chauffeur and tax preparer. Pete had a lifelong love of barbershop singing and was long active as a bass in the church choir at First Presbyterian Church in Mason City.
Preceded in passing by his parents and his younger brother John, he's survived by his sisters Patricia of State College, PA and Ann Roscoe of Tucson, AZ, the mother of his two sons, Doris Farrell, his son Michael of Saint Paul, MN, his son Patrick and family of San Diego, CA. and one granddaughter.
