Richard Robert Byerly, 85, of 1317 S. Massachusetts Avenue, died Sunday (May 23, 2004) at Mercy Medical Center North Iowa. Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Wednesday at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Avenue, with Rev. Bill Poland officiating. Interment will be in Park Cemetery, Nora Springs. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue and continue Wednesday one hour before services at the church. Memorials may be given to Wesley United Methodist Church. Richard was born May 9, 1919 in Duncan, Illinois the son of Charles E. and Stella M. (Craig) Byerly. The family moved to Mason City in 1926. Richard attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1936 where he played the violin in the high school orchestra. In 1939, he married Laurine O. Schultz. In 1940 twin sons where born to them. Richard and Laurine owned and operated Earls Fruit Market on South Federal for over 50 years. Richard retired in 1995. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and his hobbies included, fishing, hunting, reading and walking. However, his favorite thing to do was serving his customers at the market. Those left to remember his life are his wife, Laurine Byerly of Mason City; sons, William ?WC? Byerly and wife Diane of Mason City, Robert ?Bob? Byerly and wife Dolores of Mason City; his grandchildren who referred to him as ?papa?, Kelly Meszaros and husband Don of St. Augustine, FL, Stefanie Sebring and husband Eric of Port St. Lucie, FL, William R. Byerly and wife Katie of Plymouth, LeAnn Gillam and husband Sean of Northwood; great grandchildren, Mathew and Kimberly Meszaros; brother, David Byerly and wife Norma of Pocahontas; sister-in-law, Eva Marie Byerly of Dayton; nieces, Sherry Dillon and husband Dave, Sally Becker and husband Glenn, Helen Lackore, Beverly Brouwer and husband Larry, Mary, Shirley and Sue. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lucille Byerly Lackore; 2 brothers, Walter and Edwin and a sister in infancy.
