MASON CITY Robert E. Walters, age 81, passed away Wednesday morning following a long struggle with Parkinsons Disease. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday, November 23, 2009 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 North Adams with Rev. Michael Schueller officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Sunday (November 22, 2009) with a Scriptural Wake service at 7:00 P.M. at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N Pennsylvania Avenue. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to Hospice of North Iowa or the charity of the donors choice.
Bob was a lifelong resident of Mason City, graduating from MCHS in 1946. He served in the Army in Japan from 1946-1947, attended Iowa State College, and married Dorothy A. Kalec almost 60 years ago on November 24, 1949. He spent his working career in the insurance business, working at Iowa Kemper Insurance, Iowa Hardware Mutual, and finally became owner of a local insurance company, Cahalan-Walters Agency, until his retirement in 1992. His passions were building houses, rebuilding wrecked cars, farming, and his friends and family. He built and lived in four houses in Mason City. He enjoyed card games, dancing, and socializing. He is survived by his wife, a brother (Karl) and a sister (Shirley Lent), three sons and their wives (Rod and Kris of Michigan, Gary and Patty of Sioux City, and Kevin and Carol of St. Louis), 11 grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Katherine Walter, one brother (Al), and an infant daughter (Karen).
