Roy A. Carlson

MASON CITY Roy A. Carlson, 86, of Mason City, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Good Shepherd Health Center. Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. on Monday (August 24, 2009) at the First Covenant Church, Hwy 122 at South Ohio, with Rev. Tammy Swanson-Draheim officiating. Interment will be in the Nora Springs Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM 6:00 PM on Sunday (August 23, 2009) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the Roy Carlson memorial fund, in care of the family.

Roy was born to John A. and Esther (Corrigan) Carlson on January 22, 1923 on his grandfathers farm in Underhill, WI. He graduated from Gillett High School in Wisconsin. He then went to vocational school in Marinette, WI. He graduated from Waldorf College in 1948 and Westmar College in 1950. On August 17, 1946, he married Astrid S. Aasheim at the Zion Lutheran Church in McCallsburg, IA. Roy served in the U.S. Marines from 1943 1945, during WWII. In 1951, he moved to Nora Springs. Roy was an Industrial Arts Teacher for the Nora Springs, Rock Falls school district for 34 years before retiring in 1985. His students had a great respect for him. He was tough, but fair. He was a member of the First Covenant Church, ISEA and NEA. He enjoyed working with the Boy Scouts, gardening, helping with church activities, having coffee with his friends, and taking fishing trips to Canada, Mexico and Door County. He enjoyed family and friends at his cottage at Lake Koronis, boating, skiing, and fishing.Roy also enjoyed making wooden puzzle games for his family and friends. Roy was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Roy is survived by his wife of 63 years: Astrid Carlson of Mason City; his children: Grace Lewis and husband Ken of Nashville, TN, Rachel Johnson and husband Dr. Mark Johnson of Mason City, Brian Carlson and wife Amy of Peculiar, MO, Faye Bixler and husband Paul of Irwin, PA; ten grandchildren: Jaimee and husband Billy, Erin and husband Rich, Carl, Phillip and wife Sasha, Drew and fiance Caitlin, Jill, Anna, Rachel, Cody and Magdalene; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; three sisters: Fern Carlson of Gillett, WI, Elaine Larson of Dallas, TX, Carol Stone and husband Henry of Hampshire, IL; one brother: Lee Carlson of Gillett, WI; many nieces and nephews; extended family members: Bud and Pauline Johnson,. Kirk and Kathy Johnson and family; Lois Jean Vermillion.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister in infancy, a brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and a son-in-law.
