MASON CITY Royden O. Peterson, 88, of Mason City, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at the Good Shepherd Health Center. Visitation will be from 6:00 PM 8:00 PM on Friday, July 25, 2008, with a Prayer Service at 7:30 PM, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. A private family burial will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Royden Peterson memorial fund.
Roy was born on April 21, 1920 in Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Peter and Augusta (Fjone) Peterson. On May 30, 1947, he married LaVonne Mulert in Mason City. Roy served in the capacity of Machinist Mate in the U.S. Navy on the USS Crescent City in WWII from 1942 - 1945. Honorably discharged, he worked as a Mechanic for Sedars Pontiac in Mason City. Roy was passionate about fishing with his brothers and friends, he loved to go to the Mississippi and watch the water run. Roy was the neighborhood mechanic and could often be found tinkering with vehicles or motors and creating inventions to solve household mechanical problems. Roy also loved to travel to Arizona and visit his sister. Roy had a unique spirit and heart for children, he had a special way of making a child feel important and valued and was considered to be a favorite Uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was also a good neighbor and friend to all who knew him. Roy was a committed devoted husband to his wife LaVonne whom he loved with his whole heart. He had a quick sense of humor and a positive attitude. Roy amused his family with a library of Royisms and we know that hes Finer than Frog Hair now.
He is survived by his sister: Phyllis Killian of Mesa, AZ; a brother-in-law Vincent Mulert of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.
