Scott Edwin Witter, 56, long-time resident of Mason City and former Fourth Ward City Councilman died Thursday, February 23, 2012 from a sudden heart attack with his wife, Teri at his side. Funeral services will be held 1:30 PM Monday, February 27, 2012 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 120 1st Street NE with Rev. Wendy Abrahamson officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Full military rites will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 PM Sunday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the Scott E. Witter Memorial Fund. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.majorericksonfuneralhome.com Scott Edwin Witter was born March 3, 1955, in Sterling, Colorado. He was the son of the late Phyllis Ann (Smith) Witter & Harold Wayne Witter. He and his sister, Vikki (Witter) Walters were raised most of their lives by their grandmother, Elsie Amelia (Hawkins) Halley. Scott was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and was a member of the Iowa National Guard for many years. He graduated on 05/23/1979 with an Associate of Arts Degree and a Certificate of Law Enforcement from North Iowa Area Community College. He was an active member of the Mason City Jaycees for many years, past member of the Mayor’s 2000 Committee, Band Festival Committee, Board of Trustees of St. James Lutheran Church, and Past President and member of the Board of Directors of the Oikoumene Religious Center (OK House) on the NIACC campus. He was employed for many years at Curries Manufacturing, IMI Cornelius, Inc. (formerly Schneider Metal Manufacturing Co.), Schwann’s, Rex TV & Appliance, and V&M Farms. Scott enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, music, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. His greatest commitment was to the City of Mason City when he was elected to serve eight years as City Councilman, representing the Fourth Ward. Scott believed that Mason City must have an aggressive and positive city government to continue Mason City’s growth and development. His goal was to achieve the best possible opportunities for the city. He served as Chairman of the Mason City Flood and Water Committee, member of the Mason City Finance and Personnel Committees, Board of Directors of North Iowa Area Council of Government, and Board of Directors of the Top of Iowa Economic Development Regional Coordinating Council. The highlight of his eight-year term was serving as a member of the Mason City Delegation for Trade Mission and traveling to Wenzhou, China. Mr. Witter married Christa A. Kleinschmidt at Greene, Iowa on September 14, 1975. To this union, two sons were born, Christopher Scott Witter and Justin Paul Witter. On February 28, 1997, he was united in marriage to Teri (Rogers) Mitchell, with this union, Scott adopted Teri’s daughter, Emily with an open heart as his own. Teri and Scott would have celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on February 28, Scott is survived by his wife, Teri Witter of Mason City; two sons and their families, Chris Witter (Brandy Reed) and Justin Witter (Charlotte Pledge), both of Cedar Rapids, a daughter, Emily (Tyler) Fites, Shakopee, Minnesota; sister and husband, Vikki (Daryl) Walters of Holland, Iowa; two step-sons, Stephen Mitchell of Aurora, Colorado and Jonathan Mitchell of West Des Moines; grandchildren, Alexandra Marie, Faith Witter, Xavier Witter, Sophia Fites, Krista, Marquise, Brennon, Mercedes, Michael, and Keegan; niece and nephews, Amy (Chad) Vohs and their son, Jaxen, Ben (Kadi) Mills, and Alex Mills, and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elsie & Howard Halley; mother, Phyllis Ann Witter; father, Harold Wayne Witter; grandparents, Mabel and Edwin Witter; niece, Angel Mills.
