Mason City: Selmer O. Frelund, 89, of 1115 1st St. N.E., Mason City, died Sunday, May 18, 2008 at Good Shepherd Health Center with family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Our Saviours Lutheran Church, 2502 South Jefferson Ave. with Rev. Emily Horrell officiating. A Visitation will be from 5:00 PM 6:30 PM on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials may be given to the Selmer Frelund memorial fund.
Selmer was born April 23, 1919 in Mason City, the son of Peder and Mary (Haugen) Frelund. He was the fourth of five brothers. He was baptized June 1, 1919 and confirmed May 20th 1934 at Our Saviours Lutheran Church. He had been a charter member since 1925. In 1937 He graduated from Mason City High School. He entered the Army on May 20th 1944 and served his country during WWII to discharge June 17th 1946. On December 14, 1941, he was united in marriage to Beulah J. Walker at the Trinity Lutheran parsonage in Mason City, IA. To this union two daughters were born, Jo and Ruth. Selmer worked for the Mason City Millworks for 47 years as an expert glazier and craftsmen. He retired in 1985.
He was a member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church, American Legion, and the V.F.W. Selmer volunteered at the Salvation Army and at the community Kitchen. He will most be remembered for his daily journaling since 1940, and being a faithful and loving husband and great example for his family.
Left to cherish the memory of his life are his daughters: Jo Hansen and husband Harold of Mason City and Ruth Korte of Mason City; four grandchildren: Amy Crews and her husband Carter of High Ridge, MO, Douglas Hansen and his wife Debra of Hampton, IA, Julie and her husband Marlin of Mason City, Heather Bryan and her husband Wes of Charlottesville, VA; six great grandchildren: Jacob and Ciara Hansen, Cameron and Devon Crews, Nicholas Sage, Jacob, Justin, and Lauren Bryan; one brother Roy Frelund and his wife Florence; sister-in-law: Nelsa Frelund.
He was preceded in death by his wife Beulah, his parents, 3 brothers: Andrew, Melvin and Paul Frelund.
