Shirley Alice McAfee, 90, of Mason City, IA, died Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 South Pennsylvania Avenue, with Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place in Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Shirley A. McAfee memorial fund. Shirley was born May 23, 1926, in Forest City, IA, the daughter of Alvie and Mable (Whiton) Winterton. In 1944, Shirley graduated from Sturgeon Bay High School in Sturgeon Bay, WI. In 1948, she moved to Clear Lake. Shirley was united in marriage to Donald R. McAfee on June 18, 1949, and made their home in Mason City. Shirley worked for Mason City Community Schools (food service) for 16 years. She retired in 1985. She lived out her final years at The Heritage Care and Rehab Center in Mason City, IA.
Shirley most enjoyed spending time with her family. She also enjoyed vacationing at her second home in Texas, crocheting, embroidery, reading, taking care of her cats and tending to her flower garden. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where she belonged to Pricilla’s Circle.
Shirley is survived by 5 children: Larry McAfee and wife Andrea of Stevenson Ranch, CA, Russell McAfee of Mason City, IA, Alan McAfee of Fort Dodge, IA, Donna Nesje and husband Richard of Mason City, IA, and Gary McAfee and wife Virginia of Raleigh, NC; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and 2 sisters: Lucritia “Lu” Steinert of Port Washington, WI and Sandra Goodell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2014; 1 son: Warren Jay McAfee at birth; 1 brother: Francis “Archie” McMullin; and step-father: Roy McMullin.
Shirley will always be remembered for her selflessness, a strong work ethic, love of family, a kind and giving heart, and an unshakable faith in God. She set a wonderful example for all of her family members to follow.
