Mason City - Verna L.Thenhaus, age 73, of Mason City died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit following a short illness. As per her request, Verna was cremated and there will be no funeral or memorial gathering. In lieu of flowers Verna requested memorial contributions go to your local 4-H chapter. Verna was born July 22, 1938 to parents Ray and Velma Chettinger . She was raised on a farm in Buchanan County and graduated from Lamont High School. She moved to the North Iowa area in 1968 and raised 6 children. She was a dedicated office assistant at the Cerro Gordo County Extension Office for three decades, serving under 5 extension directors, retiring in 2007. 4-H was a big part of her job. She enrolled thousands of kids into the 4 H program. She organized and assisted with numerous 4-H events including the North Iowa Fair. Since retirement she has enjoyed being “grandma” and being out in the sun and to just “putter” around the yard. She is survived by her children Chris (Diane) of Clear Lake, Bryan (Michele) of Mason City, Kelley (Paul) Mattingly of Newton, Stacy (Jon) Lee of Mason City, Paula (John) Neve of Charles City; mother, Velma Chettingerof New Mexico; brothers, Curt (Joann) Chettinger of Arizona, Larry (Debbie) Chettinger ofNew Mexico; and sister, Phyllis Keefer of Oregon. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Verna will be deeply missed by all of her family and friends. Verna was preceded in death by her father; Ray; a daughter, Roxanne; and a sister, Raynelle.
