Vernon F. Schluter

MASON CITY:  Vernon F. Schluter, 84 of Mason City, formerly of Nora Springs, died Wednesday, March 26, 2008 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 A.M.  Friday, March 28, 2008 at St. Lukes Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye Ave., Nora Springs with Rev. Jenny Edinger officiating.  Interment will be in Park Cemetery in Nora Springs with Military Honors performed by the Nora Springs American Legion Post # 449.  Visitation will be held Thursday (March 27, 2008) from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Vernon F. Schluter Memorial Fund.
 
Vernon was born on March 8, 1924 in Heepen, Westfalen, Germany, the son of August and Martha (Wegener) Schluter. He immigrated to rural Eldora, IA with his parents in 1925 and attended a rural one room school house in Hardin County.  He graduated from Owasa High School in Owasa, IA in 1943.  He was drafted into the Army on February 26, 1945 and served during WWII, until being honorably discharged on October 15, 1946.  He married Margaret Chantrill on May 23, 1948 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Hubbard, IA.  Together they farmed many years in North Central Iowa until retiring in 1986.  After retirement he enjoyed volunteering with many organizations and activities.  He had a passion for old tractors, restored them and drove them in local parades.  He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He was a member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Nora Springs. 
 
He is survived by his wife, Margaret of Mason City; children, Mary Keck of Gallant, AL, and  children, Tracia (Les) Billman, Jennifer (Stephen) Markle, Kevin Lyndon (Ginni) Keck; Linda Schluter and Bob Strom of Mason City, and her children, Mark Lines, Sarah (Bob) ONeill and Scott Lines; Larry Schluter (Sharon) of Osage, IA, and his children, Janet (Charles) Hooper, Teresa Carri Schluter, and Michelle Schluter; Myron Schluter (Vicki) of Louisburg, KS, and children, Rachel and Matthew Schluter; Randy Schluter (Susan) of Mason City, and children, Nick (Sarah) Schluter and Mandy (Mike) Steckly; Dale Schluter (Karen) of Decorah, IA, and  children, Travis and Mitch Schluter; Faye Lonning (Kyle) of Mason City, and her children, Kelli, Ben, and April Jeffrey; eleven great grandchildren; two brothers, Albert Schluter and wife Ruby of Cresco, IA and Kenny Schluter and wife Dorothy of Bowen, IL; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, August and Martha Schluter.
