Vincent William Mulert, 96, of Mason City, IA, died Sunday, October 16, 2016 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Rev. Andrew A-Mensah officiating. Interment will follow in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Assn. Visitation will be held from 4 until 6 PM on Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home.
Vincent was born January 22, 1920 the son of William and Alvida (Blomster) Mulert in St. Benedict, Iowa. The family moved to Mason City in 1924 and he later graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic High School. Vincent served in the United States Army during WWII and attained the rank of Tech. Sgt. in the 8th Armored Division and was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained while in combat in Belgium.
On January 11, 1944 Vincent was united in marriage to Doris Mikkelson in Shreveport, LA. Following his medical discharge from the military, the couple made their home in Mason City and raised their 3 children there.
Vincent worked as a lineman for People’s Gas and Electric, as an auto mechanic for Hart Motors and for Dale’s Service which he later owned and operated as an independent auto repair service for several years before retiring in 1981.
Vincent was a longtime member of Epiphany Parish St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City Rifle and Pistol Club, lifetime member of the NRA, the Iowa State Trapshooting Assn., the National Trapshooting Assn., Ventura Gun Club and the VFW Post 733.
Vincent is survived by his wife Doris; Daughter, Diane (Robert) Yoshitomi of Los Angeles, CA; son William (Carolyn) Mulert of Cincinnati, OH; son in law, Ron Phelps; brother in law, Merle (Bonnie) Mikkelson; grandchildren, Brooke (Ben) Logan, Michael Phelps, Alison (Leland) Fecher, Eliza Mulert; great grandchildren, Rachel and Aaron Logan.
Mr. Mulert was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Sheila Mulert Phelps; sister Lavonne (Royden) Peterson; two brothers, The Rev. Donavon Mulert, Marwood (Virginia) Mulert; sisters in law, June Peck, Gloria Mikkelson; brothers in law, Melvin Mikkelson, Joe Peck, J.D. Rose and several nieces and nephews.
