MASON CITY: Virginia E. Smith, 80, of Mason City, died Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 AM Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Epiphany Parish St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 5th St. SE with Rev. Rodney Allers, celebrant. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Monday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue. Memorials may be directed to the Virginia E. Smith Memorial Fund.
Virginia was born February 11, 1935 in Mason City the daughter of Raymond and Mary Catherine (Urbikas) Leake. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1953. Virginia married Robert A. Smith November 19, 1955 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Mason City. She worked in the Deli at Hy-Vee East for 12 years. Virginia was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge and 500. Some of her interests included baking, cooking and spending time with her family especially her grandchildren.
Virginia is survived by 2 sons, David Smith of Forest City and Dean (Mary) Smith of Mason City; 4 grandchildren, Hannah Smith, Elizabeth (Mat) Platts, Kristin (Leon) Stitts, Patrick Smith and his fiancé, Sarah Galliart; 2 great grandsons, Michael and Benjamin Platts; 3 sisters, Donna Kriz of Waterloo, Ruth Bulyar of Clinton, Missouri and Mary Jo (Bob) Buehler of Bullhead City, Arizona; 1 brother, Raymond (Gail) Leake of Warwick, Rhode Island; several nieces and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert; 2 brothers-in-law, Melvin Kriz and Bob Buehler.
