Walter Wilson

Walter L. Wilson, 79, of Mason City, died at Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa and went home to glory on Good Friday, March 29, 2013. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 1, 2013, at Faith Baptist Church, 1807 South Kentucky, with Rev. Miles Grismore officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the church service. Lunch will follow the church service. Interment will be in the Sheffield Hillside Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Walter Wilson memorial fund in care of the family. Walter was born November 30, 1933, in Mason City, the son of Darrell and Thelma (Hennagir) Wilson. He attended Mason City Schools. Walter served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict before his honorable discharge in 1953. At the age of 22, Walter accepted the Lord as his personal Saviour. On June 6, 1956, he was united in marriage to Lavonn Soucek in Sheffield, IA. Walter worked for Mason City Builders Supply for a few years until 1958 – when he became employed with the City of Mason City – where he worked for 37 years before his retirement in 1995. Walter enjoyed spending time with his family - especially his 3 grandsons. He also enjoyed woodworking, gardening, puzzles, watching football and volunteering for multiple organizations such as Mended Hearts, Community Kitchen and extensive church volunteer work. Walt was always quick to help a friend or neighbor and never expected anything in return. Walt has always been known for his quick wittedness and his desire to make people smile. Walter was a member of Faith Baptist Church and the American Legion. Walter is survived by his wife of 56 years: Lavonn Wilson of Mason City; 2 children: Christine Handfelt and husband Bernard of Waterloo, IA and Tim Wilson and wife Renae of St. Paul, MN; and 3 grandsons: Bart Hansen of Ames, IA, Cyrus Wilson and Jonah Wilson - both of St. Paul. He is also survived by 2 cousins: Karen Klatt of Mason City and Ed Soucek of Dougherty, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his half-brother: Robert Wilson and step-sister: Connie Schneider.
