William H. Hines

MASON CITY William Henry Hines, 88, Mason City, died Saturday, March 19, 2011, in Mason City, with his daughter and the wonderful people of Heritage Care and Rehabilitation Center by his side. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia Avenue, with Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Inurnment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery. Per Williams request, he was cremated and there will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to First United Methodist Church or Hospice of North Iowa. William was born September 2, 1922, in Sterling, Colorado, the son of Ruth and Henry Hines. He lived most of his life in Clear Lake and Mason City. He graduated from Mason City High School and Hamilton Business College. He worked for Monroe Business Machine Company as a sales and service man for overthirty-five years. In 1944, he married Agatha White from Mallard, Iowa, and he always said it was the best thing that ever happened to him. They had three children: Linda, William, and Charles. Agatha developed Scleroderma and William took wonderful care of her throughout her struggle with the disease. He and Agatha were married for fifty-five years before she preceded him in death in 2000. During his life, he enjoyed fishing in Canada and South Dakota and vacations to Florida. He also enjoyed playing golf, all types of music, playing cards with friends, and good conversation. He joined First United Methodist Church in 1933, and was an active member until he was no longer able to attend in person, at which point he listened to the services on the radio each week. His strong will enabled him to overcome childhood Polio, as well as colon cancer later in life. He will be dearly missed by his sisters, Mildred Lohrman, Caroline and her husband, David Maloney; his three children, Linda McCollum, William Hines, Jr. and his wife, Dana, and Charles Hines; six grandchildren, Melinda and her husband, Timothy, Michael and his wife, Jennifer, and Melody; Britton and his wife, Melissa, Benjamin and his wife, Suzanne, and Christopher; five great-grandchildren, Michael, Londyn, Ashlee, Jacob, and Emily. His memory lives on through all of his many funny sayings. William was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his sister, Marilyn Clancy; and brother, Charles Hines.
